29 September 2011

Hello all,

 Well done to all those that made it to the glorious shores of the RYC on Sunday last as we sailed the first two races of the Hurricane Series, the weather was perfect and the company even better.

I have had glowing reports of perceived false starts, spinnakers flying on the beat ( unintentionally of course), new Sonnets turning other boat owners green with envy and long awaited Laser sailing by Benno. I have also heard from more than one source that the famous white Finn completed a race, well done to William who has obviously kicked the kicker problem.

A nice little fleet of Teras with Stuart, Sophie and Justin , and Eugene made an appearance on his Laser to give Benno someone to follow. Fantastic to see some of our star celebrities on the river again, namely Frans Loots ( Line honours in the Governors Cup False Bay to St Helena Race 2010 under the RYC flag ) and his wife Tanya on their new Sonnet and the Viviers twins ( Gold medal at the All African Games 420 ) along with an obviously proud Dad.

A special congratulations to Colin who I believe managed to keep his wife out of the water for the duration of the afternoon’s activities. Thanks as always to the tireless guys on rescue and the ladies on the bridge who make the antics on the water all possible.

East Cape All Class Provincial Regatta Mossel Bay.

Fair winds and safe travelling to all those that will be attending this weekend, The Viviers, Harth/Martins and Butler kids are those that I do know about but good luck to all that will be participating, the weather prediction looks light, cool and wet!!! Don’t you just love this sport !?

Due to the aforementioned event there will be no planned sailing at the club this weekend but as you all know you are more than welcome to go to the river and mess about in your boats.

Sailing School.

Due to the Rugby World Cup final being played on the 23 October there will be no racing that day but I will keep you all informed, it has also been decided to start the Sailing School classes the week before at 09:30 on the 16th October, we already have a few interested youngsters.

Nautical Terms

Under the weather - If a crewman is standing watch on the weather side of the bow, he would be subject to the constant beating of the sea and the spray. He will be "Under the weather". ( A position that most of us helmsman take full advantage of when bashing upwind in a chop along Box Reach).

Sailing Quote of the week

"Voyager upon life's sea;
To yourself be true, 're your lot may be,
Paddle your Paddle your own canoe." - <Dr Edward P. Philpots>

That's all for now Friends and Family, looking forward to seeing you all crossing the start line.

Kindest Regards

Andrew Butler
