Hello all,
This Sunday at Redhouse we sail races 3 and 4 of the Special Trophy II series with an early 11h00 race start time.
With a brisk westerly forecast the racing will be fast and exciting for all and will be followed by a bring 'n braai where those who were not able to sail at the KYC inter club last weekend look forward to hearing all about what I have been told was a really fantastic regatta.
Sailing School - There will be a short session of sailing school this Sunday for both junior and seniors. All sailors desiring instruction are ask to please be at the Club by 9h30 and have their boats rigged and ready so coach Steve and his assistants may start the training 10h00 sharp.
The KYC Centenary Inter Club Regatta last weekend was by all accounts a great weekend of sailing and socialising that was enjoyed by all. The final corrected results may be viewed by clicking here.
Western Province Sports Council Awards - Sailing has enjoyed well deserved recognition in the W.Cape from the Western Province Sports Council. The following verbatim copy of the media release from SAS W.Cape shows that our sport is eventually being properly recognised:-
"In response to a request received in October 2009 from the Western Province Sports Council for nominees in a variety of sporting categories, South African Sailing - Western Cape, after a certain amount of subterfuge, submitted nominations in two categories.
Having previously made nomination without reward, it was felt that whilst success in competition to the more mainstream sporting endeavours was to be hoped for on the strength of the motivations submitted, it was important for the sport of Sailing to make their support of the Provincial Department of Sport visible and by so doing, show appreciation for that we have enjoyed over the years.
Imagine the wonderful surprise to first receive recognition in the form of a “Lifetime Achievement” award being made to Roger Bartholomew for his uninterrupted 64 years in the sport of Sailing, a large proportion of which has been spent in the service of the others in Sailing at Club, Provincial, National and International level – our congratulations to Roger on his recognition and our thanks for all he has put into the sport.
The highlight of the evening is always the naming of the “Team of the Year”, normally an award associated with the Currie Cup Rugby Team or a team of similar standing in popularity. Not this time! The award was made to sailing’s “Race Ahead” project headed by David & Roger Hudson. It should be remembered that this was the team who stunned the big boys of international small craft sailing by their all but winning the Laser SB3 World Championships late last year.
As many will know, “Race Ahead” was formed by David & Roger Hudson in an effort to afford promising young sailors from all walks of life the opportunity to grow not only their sailing, but also to grow within themselves. To David and Roger go our sincere congratulations on this great and unprecedented achievement.
The “Lifetime Achievement” and “Team of the Year” awards presented are not only recognition of individual or collective effort, but also an indication that the sport of Sailing has been noted and is seen to be making a positive contribution to the society within which we live. "
RYC extends their sincere congratulations to Roger Bartholomew, David and Roger Hudson for earning these coveted awards. Let's hope that their achievement will help motivate sailors, trainers and administrators in our region to continue with their good work.
That's about all the news for this week so other than reminding you that racing starts at 11h00 on Sunday I wish you all a great weekend of sailing at Redhouse and look forward to you and your family joining us at the bring 'n braai after the racing on Sunday.
Yours in sailing
